It’s Not Harmless Fun! 4 Ways Vaping Can Endanger Your Oral Health

Millions of people use e-cigarettes on a regular basis. This practice, also known as vaping, is popular because many individuals believe that it is better for health than traditional cigarettes. While there is a kernel of truth in that assumption, e-cigarettes are not totally harmless. In fact, in addition to the overall health threat they pose, they can damage your oral health! This blog post explains how that is the case.

Dry Mouth

E-cigarettes commonly contain humectants, compounds that are used to keep things moist. Unfortunately, these substances can often contribute to a dry mouth when they are used in vaping. At a glance, that might seem like a minor problem, but the reality is that a dry mouth can greatly increase the risk of numerous oral health issues, including dental decay, gum disease and bad breath.

Gum Disease

Vaping products usually contain nicotine, which causes blood vessels to constrict. In turn, that leads to reduced blood flow in the gums. When your gums do not get enough of the oxygen and other nutrients that are transported by your blood, they are at a higher risk of infections, including gum disease. Without timely treatment, gum disease can become so severe that it endangers your overall health. In fact, it is associated with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke!

Increased Bacterial Adhesion

It is common knowledge that sweet treats, such as candies and soda, can encourage growth of oral bacteria and allow those bacteria to cling to teeth. It is less widely known that vaping products have a similar effect. In fact, they are often made with chemicals that work similarly to acidic drinks and gelatinous candies. One study even found that e-cigarette aerosols can cause a staggering four-fold increase in bacterial adhesion! The increased adhesion was most prominent in the pits and cavities in the teeth (the areas of the teeth that tend to be most challenging to clean).

Stained Teeth

Traditional cigarettes have tar, which is known for its ability to stain teeth. E-cigarettes do not contain tar, but they do have nicotine, which also has great potential to cause dental stains. Extended use of vaping products could greatly affect your smile’s natural beauty.

Vaping is dangerous for your oral health! Try to kick this habit so you can enjoy strong, beautiful teeth and gums.
