A smile is a truly valuable thing. Not only can it send a powerful message to those around you, but it can also boost your own mood! Sadly, smiles sometimes seem to be in short supply in our modern era. That is why the team at Winthrop Street Dentistry wants to encourage everyone to get into the spirit of World Smile Day, which is coming up on October 4th. This blog post discusses how you can do that.

It All Started with the Smiley Face

The origins of World Smile Day go back to 1963, when an artist from Worcester, MA, first produced the iconic yellow smiley face. The smiley face quickly became a symbol known around the world, and thousands of different versions of it have come and gone in recent decades.

Sadly, the commercialization of the smiley face seems to have diluted its potency. The symbol’s creator was concerned about this, so he chose to back up the institution of World Smile Day in 1999. Observed each October, this day is meant to remind everyone of the smiley face’s original meaning.

What is that meaning, you might ask? It is meant to encourage people to share smiles and be kind to others, regardless of differences like religion, politics and ethnicity.

Get into the Spirit of World Smile Day

Here are a few things you can do to show that you support the underlying principles of World Smile Day:

  • Be kind. You are probably a kind person already, but on World Smile Day, you may make an extra effort to put a smile on someone’s face. There are countless ways to do so, from formal volunteering to simply going out of your way to perform a random act of kindness.
  • Smile. Did you know that a smile is one of the most contagious things in the world? Friendly eye contact and a genuine smile could do much to brighten up someone’s day.
  • Take care of your smile. If you are reluctant to let your smile shine due to issues like damaged teeth or aesthetic concerns, it may be time to visit your dentist for some restorative care. A healthy smile can be even more powerful than one that is suffering.

World Smile Day will be here before you know it! Start making plans now to make the world a bit brighter on October 4th.
